Macrobiotus martini

At the 2009 Association of Southeastern Biologists meeting in Birmingham, AL, two researchers, Dr. Diane Nelson from East Tennessee State, and Dr. Paul Bartels of Warren Wilson College presented a poster naming a newly discovered species of tardigrade, or “water bear,” in memory of Martin Microscope Company founder, Robert H. Martin, Sr.

Macrobiotus martini was discovered in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, and is one of several new species discovered as part of the All Taxa Biodiversity Inventory (ATBI) that has been ongoing in the Park for about the last 10 years.

Martin Microscope Company has been privileged to be a long-time patron of ASB, and involved with the ATBI project since its inception.  We are truly honored to have Bob Martin, Sr, remembered in this way.
