Research Light Microscopes are those which generally are capable of multiple or very specialized microscopy techniques.  For biological applications, that often means a combination of Epi-Fluorescence, DIC, and / or Phase Contrast, or at least a microscope frame capable of supporting those various capabilities.  For materials sciences, it could be Reflected Light Brightfield / Darkfield / DIC / Polarized Light, or even Mach Zehnder Interferometry.  High quality zoom stereomicroscopes fall into the Research category as well.
